1
Purchase the right kind of paint. Not all types of paints will look good on your Nerf gun. One brand that historically works great is Krylon Fusion, as the paint bonds to plastic on the Nerf gun and makes the paint job last longer.
-
2
Disassemble the gun. Take apart your Nerf gun using a screwdriver. You only need to take off the panels that you feel need painting.
-
3
Sand the panels. A good sanding job will allow the paint job to last longer, so take your time on this step. Sanding will create more surface area for the paint to bond to. Sand each panel until it feels rough.
-
4
Apply the first layer of paint. Spray over the desired panel a thick layer of BLACK spray paint. This process is called "priming." Priming makes the other colors later on stick out more than they would applied just by themselves.
-
5
Let the black paint dry. Pretty simple here. It's important that the first layer of paint is dry so that new colors don't blend with the black.
-
6
Tape the panels. For sections of the panel that you want black accents on, apply painter's tape (masking and duct tape will work too but they usually leave a sticky residue) so that the new color of paint doesn't cover these sections. (If you want a panel to have a solid color, ignore this step).
-
7
Add color. Take the color spray paint you want and cover the entire panel, tape and all. Let the paint dry and then remove the tape.
-
8
Reassemble. Screw all the panels back on and admire your work. Your Nerf gun paint job is now complete!
